Thumb-Rest part 2… / Appui-pouce 2e partie…

12506886_10153800453238917_1742062076_n
I have finished recording my videos to celebrate my 30th anniversary with Ol’ Faithful, but there is still some work to do combining the sound and the video.

Besides, Lent has begun for Christians: just as Ramadan for Muslims and Yom Kippur for Jews, Lent is a time of modesty and sacrifice to help us meditate on our our connection with God (through the life of Christ for us) and the victory over sin/evil (as exemplified by the resurrection of Christ). So I need to find an inspiring, non-boastful way to present these videos.

In the meantime, here’s a little something that should be of real benefit to the oboe and clarinet community at large.
christian-islam

Lent – a time of reflection.

DISCLAIMER:
This article presents my personal opinion and my own experience: it does not pretend to offer medical advice. Please consult your certified health care professional for any physical concern.

My first article on Thumb-Rests (click here) was much more popular than I had anticipated. It was also incomplete: presenting my own solution was only the beginning, because I wanted to show what oboe manufacturers already do. During this time, some people described me their own successful implementations, so a 2nd post is definitely in order.

But first, it is really important to correctly understand the principles behind it all, so here is the video from the first post. Distribution of weight to a stronger part of the hand is a very compelling idea, but if it does not solve the problem of joint locks that constrict nerves, then there is no benefit at all.

Ergonomic Instrument Supports

I have done a good amount of research and experimentation, and in my opinion, many gadgets that are sold for computer-related injury are just plain nonsense (see previous post here). Similarly, many very expensive implements to reduce pain when playing the oboe appear to miss the point: they don’t address how the physiological problem begins. I will not discuss these, because this is HIGHLY personal: if it provides benefit to some people, then it is good and my opinion does not matter

However, I would like to present some of the solutions from other people that I DO think address the underlying causes – as described in my video. The first is a commercial gadget called “All Thumbs REST`” (Facebook here, available here) by Kate Eakin.

The velcro provides pivot capability to the rest, and this is what I like most about it. You can twist and turn it around until you acheive the most ergonomic posture for your thumb.

ouch

Locked joints will cause tension in shoulder and pinch nerves

allThumbsRest_1

More natural thumb allows freedom of movement in joints and relaxed nerves.

Below are 3 pictures of experiments I did: to distribute the weight on more of the thumb (on a bigger joint) I turned the pad to be inline with the thumb. At first this looks good (less weight on the tip)  but as you can see, it curved my thumb contrary to it’s optimal posture (see the video and the previous post – click here). If I turned the pad to match Kate’s official pictures (see above) then my thumb does indeed return to a more natural posture.
So the “All Thumbs REST” is an affordable and effective gadget that provies flexibility to find your optimal thumb posture. I find my own thumb-rest much more comfortable and useful, but I have to spend hours custom-building it and fitting it to specific hands with their different needs.

Kate also produces a harness (pictures on the left below - click here) that looks like a neck strap but there is NO presssure on the neck at all. To my taste, as you can see in the video, I prefer things like the Chicago W.R.I.S.T. (picture on the right below - click here), but if neck straps work for you, I highly recommend hers, especially for English horn or Saxophone.

A good internet friend and a young professional from Malaysia/Singapore I respect highly, Howard Ng, used my thumb rest design as an experimentation basis to come up with his own solution: one that fits him much better. As you can see from the pictures below, it is very simple to build, nearly no cost, and combines comfort with direction. His pictures show a longer thumb than mine (compared to other fingers) so his solution works great for his own physiognomy. THIS is what I promote: experiment and find what works for you based on real results, not commercial hype.

12506886_10153800453238917_1742062076_n12516141_10153800453423917_1828716102_n     12498431_10153800344513917_1554274912_n12506843_10153800344883917_457493825_n

Pretty much all oboe manufacturers now include some kind of adjustable thumb rest mechanism. Two manufacturers are especially worthy of mention as per the pictures below:
Fossati (left) uses a rest I have seen sold for clarinets that allows a rotation of the entire rest. This should allow vertically positioning the rest to a stronger part of the thumb while angling the thumb more ergonomically – but I have not actually tried this, so I can only speculate.
Püchner (right) put a swivel on the plate: this essentially provides the angling abilities of my own thumb rest, with the exception that it only rotates left-and-right, whereas my own gadget also points the thumb-tip downward. I have tried Püchner’s rest and I find it plain brilliant! Not as good as mine, but a close 2nd place.

Conclusion:
There are MANY gadgets out there for sale with the purpose of relieving pain and preventing the escalation of injury. Because each person in pain or discomfort has different situations, it is important to study the origin of the problem and the mechanics that lead to pain, discomfort and restriction while playing. This understanding will lead to the solution that is suited for your own needs: don’t believe that because something is more expensive, impressive or popular that it will actually work – it could actually make things worse. Study, seek professional help and experiment: you will find what is right for you.
Conclusion:

Oboes at Ottawa Event / Hautbois à l’événement d’Ottawa

Howarth XL | Buffet Crampon | Lorées (B-Ferillo) | Lorée d’Amore | Bocal Hiniker | Yamaha Duet+ | Kreul/Marigaux

Although this post is a couple of months late, it remains really good to discuss an event that took place in Ottawa, because this is not about flashing the news: this is about sharing ideas and experiences that make our daily lives that more more pleasant to live.
After a few years hiatus, the University of Ottawa finally hosted another weekend-oboe community event. This is really a micro-version of the annual IDRS conference: complete with exhibits of instruments, accessories and repair services (thank you Gary Armstrong! – click here) to masterclasses and workshops for students AND anyone from the general community; everything crowned by two excellent evening gala-style concerts. It was an amazing occasion for people to meet, exchange ideas, compare preferences and make new discoveries concerning the art of the instrument we love so much. It was without any exageration a very refreshing and revitalizing experience where amateurs, professionnals and aspiring serious students can share time and joyful experiences.

Thank you so much, Chip, for bringing together oboists of so many professional and amateur inclinations and goals,
it felt great to be in that world again!

Winning team: Chip and Mr. Killmer

I'm really happy the NAC Orchestra took Charles "Chip" Hamann, a Nebraskan boy who studied in Rochester NY, and turned him into a real Canadian. I can say that I have rarely seen a finer example of what it is to be a vibrant Canadian. He goes out of his way to speak French (which he possesses well) at presentations and provides a fine example of the helpful neighbour, welcoming students and community with open arms and a warm demeanour and seeking-out local professionals to help build a real community of musicians in the area.

The University of Ottawa has a rather small music department, but it's inventiveness (music technology and conducting) has struck me a few times and, in my opinion, Chip's students are among the best prepared oboists in Canada for performance and/or graduate studies. The whole class shows creativity (composition, arrangements) and team-spirit (playing together and mutual encouragement) in a truly impressive manner where one might expect (by my experience) protectionnism and grand-standing.
I knew Chip's teacher, Richard Killmer, by reputation. Seeing him in action during a masterclass for Chip's students was a real revelation. Yes, he did mention reeds, but never to suggest "do this" or "do that" or "it would be better if". When students struggled with sound, he took the reed, played it with ease and showed that problems come from nervousness and our approach to playing on stage! Over the years, I have seen some amazing masterclasses, but I rarely saw one as powerfully capable of improving comfort on stage and approaching music as a game to be enjoyed, and therefore leading the audience to enjoy the artistry behind the notes on the page.

masterclassVicAndSusan_blog

Adult Masterclass:

Once again, Chip had the truly BRILLIANT idea of organizing a masterclass for the area's adult amateur community; Suzan Morris, principal oboe at the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, once again kindly accepted to master-coach us (and masterfully she coached us, indeed).

This was again a really amazing happening: all levels from near-pro, to serious student, to very-beginner-but-highly-motivated were there, for example Vic Houle, a who plays modern AND baroque oboe after a day of assaying at the Royal Canadian Mint. This variety of playing styles is also a great motivator: beginners can be encouraged by how the more advanced have progressed and we are refreshed by the enthusiasm that we also shared when we were starting!
Now get this: Christiane Wilke teaches International Law at Carleton University (where she is also a supervisor of graduate studies)! She is probably even more obsessed about the oboe than I am as she is doing another degree in music/oboe at Carleton University with Anna Petersen (2nd oboe at the National Arts Center Orchestra who played a SIZZLING Pasculli at the Sunday Gala Concert). Christiane owns and played BOTH oboe and oboe d’amore at the masterclass as well as the students’ gala concert… not your typical tunes either, this enthusiast tackles repertoire that I can only qualify as olympian. christianeWilke Christiane Wilke enseigne la loi internationale à l’Université Carleton où elle est aussi superviseure des études supérieures!
Krishna Gelda is a biochemistry student at University of Ottawa. He came on stage after me and a few more advanced players; he apologized for not being at the same level... REALLY not necessary: quite the contrary, this very early beginner is self-teaching the instrument while playing in several amateur ensembles via the university and the general Ottawa Community.... the rest of us can take a lesson in devotion from him!

krishnaGeld

My blog seems to encourage a lot of people, but honestly, there are many amateurs with careers in other professional fields that do much more respectable public performance than I do.

Case in point:
One guy I met David C. Free, is a medical doctor by trade, at IDRS 2014 in NYC. However, to call him an amateur musician is a serious understatement: he plays oboe d'amore, english Horn and barytone oboe in very serious orchestras in the USA and Canada. He makes the barytone oboe a specialty and it really shows: powerful sound, capable of all range of dynamics that you'd only expect from the biggest names in American-school oboe.

davidCFree

OBOE TESTING!

James Mason (http://www.jimboe.ca/) brought his stock of instruments. He very likely sold some of the instruments I will comment on, but the discussion can still be interesting.
NOTE: these are MY impressions, with which many might very well disagree! Such disagreements are a good thing: it shows that instruments should be chosen for a person's own needs and preferences. The more we openly discuss and freely exchange opinions, agreements or oppositions, the more comfortable we can feel when choosing an instrument to purchase.

Howarth XL:

There were 2 Howarth XL's there, one full wood and one with a black synthetic top joint. In previous blog posts, I had remarked that every Howarth XL I have tried play exactly the same... this has not changed. Howarth remains the most predictable instrument I have ever tried!

Howarth XL:

In the documentary, "Albi's Oboe", Albrecht Mayer describes the ideal instrument as one that imposes absolutely nothing on the sound or on expressiveness or on tuning or anything: it should be a blank canvas that allows the artist (the oboe player) to do absolutely whatever s/he wants to do. Of course, Mayer is introducing the Gebrüder Mönnig 150, but when I heard him say this, I immediately thought of the Howarth XL.

If the XL had a more German sound or if it had more personality, I could choose it as the one for me to purchase. As with Lorée, Howarth synthetic materials make NO difference in sound at all. The keywork feels different from French instruments, but it is very easy to love: the tuning is nice and solid, never a congested note, just plain pleasant to blow.

Buffet Crampon

There was a used Prestige model there, I don't remember if it was Greenline or not. I have tried a number of Prestige and Orfeo and most of them just don't feel right for me. Only 2 of them impressed me: one that belongs (if she hasn't sold it) to an old Montréal friend and this one here. Like many instruments, it tends to be flat (with my reeds) between A and C. But its redeeming quality is an amazing sound colour: really baroque like. Some people say it dictates the sound too much, I say wonderful!

Buffet Crampon

This being Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) Lorée was of course the most prominently exhitibed brand. My impression of Lorée has changed a little bit. To my taste, Royals are much better than the standard or AK bores, but all of them sounded more shaky and buzzy than my own 1985 Lorée. Only 2 instruments proved to be outstanding:

  1. a very old A-Series (#AZ99)
  2. a brand new B-Copy series (AKA Ferillo model)

I have stated before that the very old Lorées are worth every penny to bring the mechanics back to new condition. These instruments maintain the Lorée sound while exhibiting NONE of the tuning or congestion problems of the new ones.

The Ferillo model doesn't look like anything special, but WOW does it ever play well! Like the A-Series, the instrument just sings with none of the headaches I have ever described in the past.  If I were to buy another Lorée, it would be this one with no hesitation and easily before the Royal 125 Amethyst. Neither the old A-Series nor the Ferillo have a 3rd octave key, and believe me, they don't need one!

Outside of the real IDRS conferences, I have never seen so many oboe d'amores, period! It seems like my own enthusiasm for the instrument has spread ... of course Albrecht Mayer making it so popular would have nothing to do with it (sarchastic)!

There was a used Lorée oboe d'amore there at a price I could afford. I must say, I do like the timbre, the tone colour, the sound quality of the Lorée d'amore. I managed to take it on trial for the evening and I was really tempted to buy it. However, the more I played with it, the more it showed its propensity, with my reeds, to produce very flat F# and A-B in both octaves, plus a resistance to dynamics in the 2nd octave key.

The bocal makes the instrument:

Part of the reason for the flaws I noticed above are how I make my reeds: I don't play the instrument very often, so I make my reeds blindly, using my regular oboe, without really knowing if they are propitious for tuning etc. Also, I make my reeds to make playing comfortable, I refuse to bend to the whims of a particular maker.

My reeds could only play well on the #1 bocal (there was also a #2 and #3 included). But David handed me his Hiniker bocal for d'amore, and the sound just blossomed, removed most of the restrictions in the upper range. It’s really astounding what changing one little pipe will do: it really changed the entire instrument!

Yahama Duet+

There were 2 of these oboes on display: both had very warm and dark sounds, enough to rival any German instrument. However, I had to ask if they were the same model because they played differently; they felt different when blowing and their response to certain notes were not the same.

I am not a fan of Yamaha: their tone colour is excellent, but they show comparable idiosyncracies for tuning and restraints as Lorée does, without even providing the strong mechanism of the latter. But I should really not put it down, big names, oboe soloists I really admire play the Yamaha Duet+.

Duet+ Yamaha

Star choice of this event:
Hans Kreul Miraphone!

I believe Hans Kreul oboes have not been made in quite a few years. This is unfortunate because this is a crazy-solid instrument in terms of tuning, presence of sound and absolutely accommodating to any articulation or dynamic I can ask of it. Very lush German sound: WOW did I love that instrument!

These German instruments have a weird resonnance hole on the side for keyed-F. I find this odd because I have always found the keyed-F to be sharp (compared to the forked F) on many makes. I was a hair away from taking it on trial with a serious intention to purchase it, but an acquaintance (Jermias Gramcko, who owns the wonderful antique English Horn mentioned – click here) brought his Marigaux 901, which had similar qualities to the Miraphone and just a few notes where I prefered the tone colour.

Kreul = Marigaux?

I found a study from the University of North-Carolina Greensboro that explains how the Kreul family actually owned Marigaux for some time (available here). This might explain why the characters of the Miraphone and the 901 are nearly identical despite the 901 keeping it’s tone more evenly throughout the whole range. Both have rock-solid tuning and complete dependability for dynamics and articulation: they both feel the same when blowing and playing in the styles I enjoy.

I guess that (my own supposition, no one told me this) that Kreul might have established the benchmark for the instrument as an ally and to support the artist in everything s/he wants to do and the later generations of Marigaux refined the sound qualities that make it so highly prized almost world-wide.

Kreul = Marigaux?

Honestly, between the Miraphone and the 901, there are pros and cons whereby I could buy either one and not miss the other. So in the end, it boiled down to two things:

  1. The Miraphone needs a few hundred to a thousand dollars worth of mechanical work, because I don't want to settle for less than extraordinary.
  2. The Marigaux did maintain a better tone quality in the upper range notes.

Also right now, I didn't have the budget.... So choosing to wait was easy.

WELCOME 2016 ! / BIENVENUE À 2016 !

As usual, I want my New-Year blog post to be very thankful for the musical life of the past year and the wonderful people who have shared it with me here and on Facebook: your visits, e-mails comments really make my journey back from musical silence that much more wonderful.

Most notably, 2015 cemented a trend that started a few years ago: I have the thrill of corresponding seriously about music with a number of professional oboists whose artistry I respect. It is amazing to be able to discuss performance style and instruments with people who really have the experience I envy! Through Facebook groups and You-Tube, I had the super pleasure to come to know styles and aesthetics in a variety that was simply unavailable, without spending a fortune in travelling, even ten years ago.

Lovely year, artistically:

In 2015, I received 2 amazing compliments about my oboe playing:

1. At the Oboe Weekend Event at the University of Ottawa (blog post next time), I was testing out many instruments, playing suites by Bach, Telemann, and excerpts from The Strauss Concerto. After the gala concert, a teenage girl comes up to me saying that my instrument testing amazed her: she had never believed the oboe could yield such variety of expressive possibilities. Even though we heard many amazing artists, she insisted that my playing (which was not even careful: I was testing instruments!) had really left an impression!

2. After the Christmas Eve service (read here), this man walks up to me, explains that he plays piano by ear only (another computer-programmer who is passionate about music) and that my playing had left a mark: yes the instrument sounded wonderful, but in my playing, he could hear and feel the joy I have at performing.

I MEAN, WOW! Seriously, can anyone, amateur or professional, ask for better compliments? ... I guess I might as well continue to practice and make You-Tubes!
Of course, a year review should be complete and include the rough parts as well as the encouraging ones. Let me explain using the story of the Christmas Carol "In Dulci Jubilo" to explain what I call the "Bernstein Directive". The song Chirstians know as "Good Christian Men Rejoice" (today: "Good Christians All Rejoice") was originally "In Dulci Jubilo" (Latin for "In sweet jubilation"). Legend says that the year 1328, during the European plague called the "Black Death", an Angel appeared to Friar Heinrich Seuse and dictated this song with the mission of reminding everyone that even in the worst, nightmarish times, God's Love still shines bright on us and we should always find time and a way to rejoice in it.

I find there is an enormous relevance with Leonard Bernstein's reaction to the assasination of JFK:
«We musicians, like everyone else, are numb with sorrow at this murder, and with rage at the senselessness of the crime. But this sorrow and rage will not inflame us to seek retribution; rather they will inflame our art. Our music will never again be quite the same. This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before. And with each note we will honor the spirit of John Kennedy, commemorate his courage, and reaffirm his faith in the Triumph of the Mind.»
... do both these stories not speak loudly to our current world?

Let's be honest: 2015 was the culmination of violence, aggression and destruction based on lies that have been bubbling for many years now. We want 2016 to be a happy year, a year of joy and freedom all over the world: this can only happen if we study the troubles of the past and do what we can to avert repetition.

NEVER AGAIN!

I am a musician (amateur) who wants to perform in public more and in more sophisticated settings. Goals like this normally mean to make friends and not annoy anyone that could help me. But as I look at what is happening in the world right now, I think about Kristallnacht and the years of hatred that gave rise to the 3rd Reich against Jews, homosexuals, people with physical or mental disabilities, Catholics, Free Masons, negroes, all Polish people, Slovenes and select Spanish people and I think to myself: I will NOT be the man who stays silent while this repeats itself to ANY culture or nation on the planet, not the First Nations Tribes in Central and South America and not the lies that are turn religions of peace into brutal forces against each other.

The evidence of the lies is out there and only people who choose to ignore it are capable of disbelieving it. EVERY part of the world is abusing history to build on our fears in order to ignite hatred for each other, mixing truth with lies so we cannot tell the difference --- this is happening in every imaginable "theory" or story line --- shutting out the news from other languages and countries so we will not even know there exist other sides of the story, indeed other stories at all.

The horrors of the Holocaust Concentration Camps will not likely be repeated: Hitler did not have intercontinental balistic missles or air-strike drones, but the massacre and ruin of innocent families by the millions is no less apalling. And remember (read-up on history) that THE PEOPLE of those countries saw their leaders like heroes: Mussolini, Hitler, Lennin/Stallin, Mao Tse-Tung, even Napoleon, all of them were hailed as liberators from oppression.... before they took away freedom, truth in reporting, intellectual enquiry and artistic creation, all in the name of security, order and progress.

Retired American political consultant fighting for integrity in journalism.

So what will I do about it?

Not much, actually: I already did it, now I will continue with the Bernstein Directive. One man alone can do very little: it takes entire societies to heal themselves, by taking active interest in their fate. The most I am capable of doing, is to pass the word on issues as I find them, to the best I can weed-out what I consider credible amidst the copious hog-wash out there: but the existence of rubbish does not preclude fact entirely. And MANY people and forces that protray themselves as heroes are brazenly, openly and undeniably guilty of unspeakable brutality: horors many people refuse to believe thought they have been condemned internationally by dedicated officials.

Now, I put the doubt in people's mind, challenging everyone to question and verify. People of good heart will do the research and, will either prove me wrong or prove me right: either way, people will start thinking for themselves and seeking for the Truth notwithstanding what the news tells them. Free and respectful discussion, insisting on integrity in journalism, such is the strongest weapon of the people.

With that, the only thing I need to do is continue to play oboe and English Handbells, making arrangements and performing for live public and for You-Tube, hoping that musicians of all levels and experience will continue to encourage and inspire each other.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Merry Christmas Carols! / Joyeux (Cantiques de) Noël!

I really wish to all amateur oboists in the world (and professionals too) that this was just as Merry a Christmas Musical Season for you as it was for me!

Return from exile

This year really felt like a return from exile: over 16 years with essentially no live-on-stage performance and now all of what follows… starting with small roles that just grew to something any amateur can be proud of. Now, thanks to people I have met along the way (the credit really goes to them) I am actually seen by my community as a soloist!

God willing, because it really is by the Grace of Providence that any of this happened, the trend will continue and a solid professional career in computer development will support a growing musical adventure!

A quick survey of the great times I had this year, musically:

  • Oboe with Bell Choir in the gorgeous piece "Spiritus" at University of Ottawa (Music and Beyond festival) and for the CFUW Scholarship Fundraiser.
  • Playing bass chimes and learning English Handbell ringing.
  • Playing solo oboe with the Trinity Hilltop Bell quartet (O Holy Night).
  • Oboe with piano: Bach, Telemann
  • Solo (unaccompanied) at a Retirement Home and at an Arts Exhibition.
  • Drafting adaptations/arrangements for oboe and various English Handbell ensembles.
  • The opportunity to review excellent reedmakers from various countries.
  • A fantastic Oboe Weekend Event at University of Ottawa with new instrument discoveries (very late blog post to come after the New-Year).
  • Developing much clearer profile for a favourite reed to make my Lorée play and sound better than it ever has before (I still prefer Marigaux, Fossati, Dupin, Rigoutat, Mönnig, Püchner, Bulgheroni, Howarth...)
  • Oboe and piano: Bach, Haendel and Christmas carols with my own ornamental variations for 2 Christmas Eve Church Services filled to capacity (over 250 people each service).
  • Mystery project I hope to expose in the New Year... if it's ready by then!

No Pain, No Gain

As you can see, this was a very exciting year, which might explain why I was less active in Tai-Chi (despite beginning lessons with a real advanced instructor) and therefore felt more pain and suffered more headaches than in the past few years.... the musical rebirth does make it worthwhile!

Again, all of this has been made ten times more thrilling by being able to share it with all of you, my very kind visitors, and my very encouraging friends on Facebook! So I wish all of you, in every language, in every country and in every climate and weather condition the most joyous Holiday Season!

Avoid Pain - My Own Ergonomic Thumb Rest

DISCLAIMER:
This blog post, and the video it presents, are the result of observations and conclusions based on my own personal experience: they only intend to pass on my opinions in the hopes that they may inspire others to seek their own solutions with the help of health-care professionals. This blog post, and the video it presents, deal with a potential solution to the issue of prohibitive pain while playing the oboe and other instruments where the underlying problem follows the same physiognomic principles: the post and video DO NOT pretend to provide authoritative medical advice and visitors are encouraged to seek certified medical advice from registered health care professionals before using the information contained; all responsibility will fall on the person who makes any relevant decisions.

Fibromyalgia Update:

20151101_122220The first few years of this blog included more focus on my conditions of chronic pain and fatigue (fibromyalgia)... later I preferred to focus on my musical progress because it is more encouraging! Just to recall, fibromyalgia is a medical condition that affects the nervous system, causing persistent pain; the cause for this is not known and the diagnosis comes when medical science has ruled-out everything it would normally identify as a cause. No viral or bacterial disease, no cancer, no MS, no genetic or nervous disorder: nothing out of the ordinary and yet I can be in debilitating pain (literally) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 52 weeks a year - I have suffered this since the age of 32 and will likely have this for the rest of my life. In the past few years, Tai-Chi and Chi-Gong have proven very effective in fighting the condition - much more effective than medication in my case - thus making it possible for me to aim to very high goals on the oboe.

Learning to ring handbells under the excellent
tutelage of the amazing Stuart Belson
at Trinity Presbyterian Church

This year (2015) has been more difficult than the past few years, especially since the spring. I think this is due to extremes in weather patterns (very rapid changes) but also due to more involvement in musical activities, oboe and English handbells, which takes away from my time to train in Tai-Chi and Chi-Gong. Ironically, I have begun to take lessons from an advanced teacher, but the form I am learning (Old Yang Lu Chan) is very difficult and works muscles I never knew existed! So the adjustment period is long: it is less impactful now, but the first few months were gruelling.

Overall, the intensity of pain is much less than it was a few years ago; in other words, my legs, back and arms hurt less and I have become more capable of doing more strenuous work with less painful reaction afterwards. However, general muscle tension is higher all day, every day, especially in the shoulder and neck muscles. This is problematic with my computer job (too many hours seated and typing) exacerbate the inflammation in the trapezius which causes compression on cervical nerves, resulting in very painful headaches - I have not found any pills (over the counter or by prescription) that take away significant amount of pain.

Ironic pain sensitivity:

So my weekly headaches have returned. What is strange is that the actual intensity of pain is lesser (my headaches hurt less than before) but my tolerance for them has also decreased: so despite being better, it feels worse and I get more discouraged than before. I suppose this is just plain psychological exhaustion with the whole matter.

From violin technique to oboe freedom.

=> You know what? This just means I enjoy practising the oboe even more: it really means a lot to me to perform difficult music on oboe and handbells and just focus on artistic beauty for half an hour every day (more on weekends) and just forget the drudgery of "normal" life!

Presenting a potential solution for debilitating pain from performing the oboe or clarinet.

One of the reasons I stopped pursuing a career as a professional musician is that I suffered tendonitis in the thumb, elbow and shoulder. After 3 years, the condition cleared completely, but relapses continued to occur from time to time up until a few years ago. Now relapses in tendonitis from practising the oboe have stopped completely, and the reason is a very special ergonomic thumb-rest I designed. The design is the result of observing how holding the weight of the instrument impacts the natural posture of the hand and how the resulting change of configuration of the hand and fingers affects the whole arm up to the neck (inclusively). These observations reminded me of principles and exercises given to me by my violin and cello teacher when I took string techniques class at McGill University, many years ago. I put these principles into my thumb-rest design and the results speak for themselves: practising the oboe never causes pain beyond what I normally get from daily activity - tendonitis, for me, is a thing of the past.

backView[3]Address the real problems: body structure and freedom of movement

Over the years, I've seen many mechanical gadgets sold in music stores and even through medical prosthetics laboratories. What has struck me is that in almost all cases, some time after the purchase of these stands and supports, oboists and clarinettists continued to suffer prohibitive pain due to injury or irritation in the muscles and nerves. Some of these musicians eventually "returned to normal" by adopting lifestyle changes including continued therapy with the Alexander Technique, Pilates, Tai-Chi and other such "soft" approaches: these recovered musicians no longer rely on any implement at all!

topViewIt seems that many solutions lead to believe that distributing the weight higher up to bigger joints will solve the problem: the idea is to put the weight on the stronger parts of the hand. There is some merit to the idea, but if it does not prevent pinched nerves due to poor posture in the neck or strained joints in the thumb and wrist, then moving the weight simply does nothing.  Furthermore, if a stand, support or other implement requires the arm or neck or torso to remain immobile, then tension builds up in areas that affect the spine: do study how nerves come out of the spine and how essentially all strength and action eventually originates from the spine: the spine MUST remain free to move.

When the problem really is strength:

20151031_170714_LLSSome people have asked me if the Imperial oboe by Dupin or the Ludwig Frank Brilliant model might not make the instrument too heavy (because of their large bells) and thereby promote tendonitis. My answer to that is simple: if the difference in weight (compared to a regular Lorée or Marigaux or Yamaha or Howarth or Fox) is a serious problem for you, perhaps you'd better take up the recorder or the baroque oboe. However, most musicians do have one source for potential injury: a disdain for strength and fitness training... I mean, we are artists, not athletes, right? WRONG: lack of physical activity is a huge source of stiffness, pinched nerves and simply leaves your body depleted of energy and powerless to perform to the very high physical requirements of playing a musical instrument. If the following two points must be considered for proper health:

  1. mobility of the nerves and joints (wrist, neck, shoulders, spine and hips)
  2. relaxation and looseness of while playing the instrument: be sure to use the appropriate muscles, not those for lifting or pushing heavy objects

Both points imply no pressure or constriction on the body. When they are both well addressed, most people should be strong enough to play any modern oboe and even the English horn (possibly even the barytone oboe) with no straps or pegs or anything.

My favourite way to remedy that is Tai-Chi because it is gentle and artistic, it builds mental focus and concentration (very important for sight-reading) AND MOSTLY it strengthens the small stabilizer muscles that are left weak by almost all traditional sports and athletics. When these muscles are weak, bigger power muscles (those that are trained by sports) take over without ever noticing the difference: problem is, the big power muscles also cause strain on the joints and compression on the nerves! Strong stabilizer muscles leave the body loose and ready to perform music fast and with fluidity.

20151031_170718_LLSWhy no patent?

My own personal success with this Ergonomic Thumb Rest ("my gizmo", as I call it) has been so dramatic that I wanted to patent it, with the hopes of licensing its production to some company. But at IDRS 2013 in Redlands CA, two things happened (I had been hiding my gizmo, nobody saw or heard about it):

  1. I saw the thumb rests of Fossati and Püchner (although different from my gizmo) address the issue, possibly just as well.
  2. I had started talking with a professional oboist (and long-time teacher) who described to me the thumb-rests she gets her students to build for themselves and her description was nearly identical to my gizmo.

By definition of domestic and international patents, point #2 means I cannot patent my design (or only such a small part of it as to make a patent virtually useless). As of today, November 1st 2015, when I put up this blog post and video on You-Tube, my design is now disclosed to the public and no one in the world, by patent law as I understand it, is allowed to claim intellectual property - unless a patent application had already filed some time before. I am unaware of any such patent application: if I am wrong, please send me a letter of "cease and desist" with all the pertinent information and I will remove my You-Tube and this blog post.

Solution: free design!

Because I cannot patent it, I cannot manufacture these ergonomic thumb-rests in great quantity. Disclosing and giving the design freely to all allows anyone to produce it (using the same or different materials and methods) and many more musicians can benefit from it. To my limited knowledge of law (please verify with a real lawyer) full disclosure means that as of now, anyone can manufacture and distribute these.

Conclusion:

I really hope this helps many, many more musicians enjoy pain-free and full-potential music performance, just as it has helped me maintain and raise the limits of my abilities on the oboe.
